Cryo-pulverizing is a preliminary step used with tissue homogenization. It is particularly valuable with tough tissues like skin, cartilage, etc. The powdered tissue can then be rapidly disrupted using mechanical/chemical disruption procedures. Pulverizers function at liquid nitrogen temperature. Dry-ice can also be used but results are sometimes less satisfactory.
