BioSpec Products makes three devices designed to prepare mono-cellular dispersions from liver, muscle brain and other soft tissue. A large fraction of the cells remain intact and viable after this process and can be plated or transferred to fresh media for maintenance and growth.  The equipment can also be used as a preliminary step toward recovery of very high molecular weight DNA via enzymatic/chemical procedures.

The fresh tissue, without any added buffer, is forced through very small holes under high pressure. The first two devices are the Tissue Press (capacity 10-50g) and the smaller capacity MicroMincer (1-300mg). Both work by manually turning a threaded piston to drive tissue through a 500 micron stainless-steel screen. The MicroMincer uses disposable liners so it is not necessary to dismantle and clean the apparatus between samples.
