The Mini-Beadbeater-96 is high-energy, high-throughput cell disrupter. In a single 1-3 minute batch run it handles up to 192 samples using a microplate format or 45 samples in 1.5 or 2 ml microvials. In a busy day thousand of samples can be processed.

Product Description

The Mini-Beadbeater is designed for high-throughput analytical screening of small biological samples. It efficiently and safely disrupts up to 192 samples of spores, microorganisms, plant and animal tissue, or soil samples. In the beadbeating process samples, extraction media and tiny ceramic beads are sealed in microvials or microplates. After 2-3 minutes of violent shaking in the Mini-Beadbeaater greater than 95 percent of the cells are disrupted.
The Mini-Beadbeater-96 platform can hold 45 standard microvials in a provided vial holder or one or two standard 96 deep well microplates. Because plates, vials, and beads are disposable the method is ideal for PAGE, PCR and Probe applications where cross contamination between samples cannot be tolerated. Compatible with phenol, Gu-SCN or various commercial kit solutions, RNA/DNA is quickly recovered in the highest possible yields by the synergy of doing mechanical cell disruption and nucleic acid extraction simultaneously.
Protocols using different models of the MBB are transferable with little if any modification.
The microMiniBeadbeater can be used for dry grinding. In this application, steel beads are added to hard samples such as hair, bone, teeth, seeds and minerals and are completely powdered in 10-60 seconds. Softer materials such as biological tissue, rubber or plastics can be powdered by first pre-freezing the sample to liqN2 temperatures (Cryo-grinding). A solid aluminum vial holder (see accessories below) can also be utilized for maintaining cryogenic temperatures during beadbeating.
*Update: We now offer polypropylene microvials made with special resin and structurally reinforced in key locations. Called the 'XTuff' microvial, because it is 10X tougher than ordinarly 2 ml microvials, it can handle the dry grinding process using steel beads. See our vials web page.

Helpful Advice when Buying a Commercial High Through-put Cell Disrupter

Specifications

  • HIGH ENERGY 1 HP induction motor. 115v version requires a 20 amp dedicated line - 230v requires a 10 amp dedicated line.
  • Size: 18'H X 24'L X 16'W, 115 lbs.
  • Sample Capacity: Holds up to 45 microvials (0.5, 1.5 & 2.0 ml), or one 2 ml deep-well microplate or two 1.1 ml deep-well microplates with each vial or well containing up to 400 mg (wet weight) of biomaterial.
  • Oscillation distance or Throw: 1.25 in. (3.2 cm)
  • Shaking Speed: 36 oscillations/second or 2100 oscillations/min. Disruption efficiency equivalent to that of lower capacity MBB models, thus protocols are interchangable.
  • Shaking pattern: Shaking top to bottom of vial or plate in a compressed figure-8 pattern, with vials or microplate wells held in the more efficient near-horizontal orientation.
  • Timer: 0 - 5 minutes with automatic reset.
  • Recycle delay time: Zero. No imposed motor cool-down time between sample runs.

Other Information

  • The Mini-BeadBeater-96 operates at room temperature. Like all high-energy cell disrupters, sample heating from collisional friction is about 10 deg for each minute of beadbeating. For sustained cooling of samples a pre-cooled solid aluminum vial holder (cryoblock)is recommended. It is available as an accessory.

  • The Mini-BeadBeater-96 can be used to grind air-dried or freeze-dried plant and animal tissue. This works well with non-woody tissue and for tissue not having high lipid or oil content. When dry- or cryo-grinding plant or animal tissue use stainless steel microvials with silicone rubber caps(see 'Vials' link on left margin) and a few 3.2 mm diameter chrome steel beads. Beadbeat for 10-60 seconds. Common plastic microvials will break when dry grinding with steel beads. However, steel beads can be used in these plastic vials if the vial is completely filled with water or solvent (i.e., wet milling). As an aside: Bruno Zelleni at Cornell University reports that dry grinding of lyophilized fungi gave very high MW DNA in good yields. Frozen or fresh fungi ground in liq.N2 with a mortar and pestle did not. *Update: We now offer polypropylene microvials made with a special resin and structurally reinforced in key locations.   • When using deep well microplates possible leakage and subsequent cross contamination between wells is a valid concern. While the entire mat surface will be clamped onto the microplate during beadbeating in the Mini-BeadBeater-96, the user must first thoroughly press the mat onto the microplate in the initial sealing process. Rollers and mat presses are available to help in this task (see accessories listed below). The best mats are made of silicone rubber. Mats made of other rubber-like polymers or adhesive- or heat-bonded films may not prevent leaking during intense shaking in the Mini-BeadBeater-96. BioSpec offers Axygen brand microplates and mats (see accessories listed below). We have tested many plate and mat combinations and found that this brand of plates and mats stands up to the shaking energies of the Mini-BeadBeater-96 better than most others. If you want to check the integrity of your favorite deep well plates, give us a call for a simple testing proceedure. Should microplate integrity not meet your expectations, turn to time-tested screw cap microvials. All Mini-Beadbeater-96's include a microvial holder that holds up to 45 vials.
