Tissue grinders disperse and disrupt small tissue samples by being repeatedly pressed or squeezed between two hard surfaces. Usually, one surface is concave-shaped (the mortar) and other convex (the pestle). The mortar can also be shaped to the geometry of the test-tube, in which case the pestle is tight fitting with a clearance of 0.1 - 0.2 mm between the inner walls of the test tube and the pestle surface. The tissue is repeatedly squeezed through this mortar-pestle clearance.
Soft tissue samples with high water content (example; liver, muscle, fruits), frozen and kept at dry ice- or liquid nitrogen temperatures, are very easily fractured into powder using the crushing action of a similarly cooled motar and pestle. This special process is called cryogrinding.
Another category of mechanical homogenizer that also operates, at least in principle, by "hard surface to hard surface" grinding forces are beadbeaters (aka, bead mills).
The BioVortexer™ is a battery-powered motor drive designed to rotate stirring rods or plastic pestles in 1.5 ml microtubes. Rotating at thousands of revolutions per minute, it makes short work of dispersing centrifugal pellets or grinding small tissue samples.
